I’ve personally found that H. deppii are fantastic par-
ents that really take time to look after their brood.
Strongly bonded pairs will not squabble. The down-
side to this strong bond within a community tank is
aggression. The pair I had was fully grown and easily
dominated half the tank when spawning. As soon as
the fry became free swimming, the parents dominat-
ed the whole tank. No fish would dare go near the
pair, even a 30cm Vieja argentea. I witnessed the
male fish making regular runs and charging at the

the V.argentea. Smaller fish weren’t attacked,
but kept in check.
Once they start spawning, there is no stopping
as they are extremely prolific spawners. Fre-
quency of spawning will certainly be dictated by
the temperature of the tank, they were noted to
spawn in water as high as 28f-84c. Spawning
them in a species only tank would probably be
the best option. Males have reported to become
aggressive and kill the female, so provide caves
