A female protecting a clutch of eggs In early 1989 Rusty Wessel, Ross Socolof, Harry Spetch and Tom Grimshaw discovered the species in Rio Danli (Honduras). They described them as red points referring to the red colour on the points on the dorsal, anal fins and cau- dal peduncle. There have been many questions asking if they are just a geographical variation of Cryptoheros nigrofascia- tus, however the consensus is that they are a separate spe- cies. There are said to be two variations doing the rounds, the Rio Danli and Rio Monga. The former is said to be the true ‘honduras red point’ with the latter more likely a variation of C. nigrofasciatus? Beware, there are many hybrids also doing the rounds which are a mix between the red points and C. nifrofasciatus popu- lations. True hondurus red points will display very blue col- ouration compared to fish of mixed province! Step 3 Step 4 Step 3: I add pebbles & large cobbles, these blends in the different rocks formations used. Try to space out the cobbles rather than just pil- ing them in one place, try to imagine how the riverbed may look. Step 4: A couple of thin beach tree branches are added to the display, this is completely optional. Install the external filter and heating; then slowly fill up the aquarium. 27
