The overall profile colour of the fish consists of a
light brown with a black angular shape on the side.
The scales exhibit various colours that can include
yellow, brown, beige, black and blue iridescence in
the unpaired fins. Each colour of fish in the aquari-
um can be a little different. In my group of six fish,
one female was clearly lighter than the other three
females and this was not because of breeding col-
ours, but normal colouration. When C. intermedi-
um display spawning colours, the dark angular
marking fades and the overall complexion is dis-
played with dark vert ical barring.

Conspecific aggression was noted in the aquarium;
however aggression towards other species ap-

The behaviour of C. intermedium in the aquarium
seems that we are dealing with a group fish with
an under mutual ranking, somewhat similar to fish
of the genus Tropheus from Lake Tanganyika?
