As part of a recent field trip of the CARAC Anni- versary I went to Sabinas Hidalgo, in the state of Nuevo Leon where I had the opportunity to pho- tograph Herichthys cyanoguttatus in the wild. I have to say this place is beautiful and has a very natural part in which there are buildings, pools and barbecues and so on, but we were in the part where the natural beauty was still intact! There was only a small grill and a great shade of a huge tree in one of the arms of the river. This particular part does not have a great flow to it, although most of it is channelled through drainage pipes, I suppose to use for the nearby village? I must say that this variety of H. cyanoguttatus is very striking for their colour. Unlike other popula- tions, such as Bustamante in the state of Nuevo Leon, most features shades of brown and purple eyes, this type of shades is also present in other populations, but with a much lower incidence. It is likely that the type of feeding influence the final colour of the fish? Scientific studies should be made to determine this with certainty, which I doubt is on the list of some scientist now. What- ever the reason, the population is sui generis. I noticed that the body also has a slight elongation compared to the population of Bustamante or the Laguna de San Ignacio, Nuevo León. One can say that the speciation process is on-going and if the- se varieties don’t disappear, eventually they will be a distinct species. Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 1: In this town the water is hot. It is main- tained in a 38 ° C throughout the year due to some volcanic activity. P
