spawners and will use them as a potential spawn-
ing site. exCichlasoma tuyrensis is regarded as
omnivores in the aquarium, however vegetable
matter makes up a large part of their diet. We
shouldn’t be completely discouraged from using
hardy plants as part of their decoration as it is re-
ported that this helps them feel secure. At the
end of the day, this is all down to personal prefer-
ence, but it is important to highlight all the possi-
ble options available.

Originally described as Cichlasoma by Meek et al,
1913, it has since had another 4 revisions. Stawik-
owski et al 1998 proposed the complex Vieja
where the fish is sometimes still commonly re-
ferred as. Sven Kullanders Check List of the Fresh-
water Fishes of South and Central America (2003)
also lists the fish as such. For now recent revi-
sions of C. tuyrensis includes them in the pending
category list of exCichlasoma until a more com-
prehensive study of the fish is put forward.
