A male Astatheros altifrons guards his free swim-
ming fry. When breeding, both fish will turn
quite pale sometimes displaying barring. The yel-
low lips and throat region that these cichlids dis-
play in normal colouration will fade and turn a
darker colour with a dark sooty throat.
