Herichthys bartoni have been noted in my own
aquariums to display different colour phases,
from blue to yellow. Including the spawning
dress, they have been noted to display at least
five colour phases.
Herichthys bartoni initially won’t start to devel-
op the striking Tuxedo look until they become
either dominant or start pair bonding.
Pairs will swim in synchronization along the
length of the tank fanning their fins and body
shimmering.
You can see in the inset photo that the female
fish of the pair has developed the black and
white tuxedo spawning dress.
Sexual dimorphism can be weak in younger fish.
My own observations noted that females appear
rounder than males and males are more elon-
gated and appear to have a much wider caudal
fin.
