July 2016 - Volume 2, Issue I It is very encouraging that some rich people realize the fact that accumulation of wealth does not serve to get happiness, so they tilt to charity for finding their inner satisfaction, happiness and sense of achievement. They feel better upto some extent with such ‘tilts’ but ‘sustainable’ happiness lies in being friendly to surroundings and humanity, and this needs to be considered a ‘better’ charity. Hence, there is a simple logic that sustainability and happiness exist in being friendly to the nature. The nature has already set some ‘DOs’ and ‘DON’Ts’. Any deviation from the principles of nature will lead you to ‘unsustainability’ which is irreversible and can never be corrected at the end. There is a need for ‘continuous thinking and working for sustainability’ just right from the start to get ‘ultimate’ happiness, satisfaction and peace of mind etc. The scientists and professionals must strive hard to identify and discover the‘DOs’ and ‘DON’Ts’ for different sectors of economy and legislatures must do their job religiously to be friendly to humanity. Pakistan is a growing economy and the issue of sustainability needs to be taken seriously to avoid disastrous situation down the road. The China Economic Corridor is expected to bring a lot of economic activities including development of industrial cities. It is high time to highlight the issues related to sustainability right from the beginning and prove to be friendly to environment and humanity. The Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs) or other organizations with similar mandate should involve academia and industry to develop sustainability framework for every sec-tor of industry. Local chapters of Professional bodies like IIE, ASME, IEEE etc must come forward to coordinate and support the activities for sustainable processes, product and systems. This will spur purpose-based and multi-disciplinary research in the country and help develop a base for ‘green’ and ‘blue’ economy. 13
