Pennsylvania has opportunities for tailgating before the ‘Big’ Game
O
ne of the great advantages to owning a recreational vehicle
is that it is practically custom made for tailgate parties at
sporting events. With many newer model motorhomes and
travel trailers featuring outdoor cooking areas and entertainment
centers, sport fans can travel to their favorite venues and set up
the festivities with relative ease. Additionally, traveling to events
in a home on wheels many times can circumvent the necessity of
booking hotel and motel rooms while on the road.
With professional and college sports as well as auto racing, tailgate
parties are prevalent throughout the year in Pennsylvania – with
many venues throughout the commonwealth providing parking
for fans who are looking to put out a spread while playing a few
games of corn hole. Although not every venue in the state offers
space for recreational vehicles, all do provide plenty of space for
fans who like to start the party before the games begin.

In the NFL, your tailgate party is almost as important as your
team, and Pennsylvania’s atmosphere ranks among some of the
league’s best – with both Lincoln Financial Field and Heinz Field
earning in the top 10 designations for best tailgating according to
Bleacher Report and The Daily Meal.

The city’s sports complex, which includes Lincoln Financial for
football, Citizen Bank Park for baseball and the Wells Fargo
Center for hockey and basketball, offers 38 surface parking lots
– with roughly one-third of these designated for tailgating. Some
of these lots are available to the general public on a first come,
first serve basis on game day while others are sold in advance as
part of season ticket packages. Additionally, most of these parking
facilities offer parking for motorhomes and oversized vehicles
– with standard vehicles costing $40 to park and larger vehicles
priced at $80 for the 2018 season.
Grills and alcohol are permitted in these facilities, which generally
open five hours before the game is scheduled to begin.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Sitting at the foot of the confluence of the Allegheny and
Monongahela rivers, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field offers a first-rate
football experience as well as some of the best views of the city.
As the home to the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh
Steelers, University of Pittsburgh Panthers and a handful of
concerts throughout the year, the parking lots at Heinz have
developed a reputation as some of the best parties in the country
since the stadium opened in 2001.
The vicinity around Heinz Field offers a combination of 22
surface lots and garages that offer parking on a first come, first
serve basis as well as presold spaces. According to representatives
from the Allegheny County Parking Authority, campers,
motorhomes and other large vehicles are not permitted in stadium
parking lots.
