Power Generator

An on-board generator , common to many motorhomes , provides the ability to produce 120-volt alternating current ( AC ) at will . Portable units are also available for RVs not so equipped from the factory . Having the capability to power televisions , computers , convection ovens , air conditioners , hair dryers and an assortment of kitchen gadgets will quickly prevail over the nuisance of having to stow and transport a portable unit .

Inverter

High tech power inverters are also available for those AC needs . The
inverter is the electrical opposite of the power con-verter . That is , DC power from the battery bank is inverted to 120-volts AC power . Electronically processed , this inversion is totally silent and provides an alternative to the somewhat noisy generator .
Though low frequency inverters are less expensive and considered efficient devices , they are , however , prone to voltage fluctuations which can cause disturbances in some DC circuits . Pure sine wave inverters , on the other hand , are extremely advanced and can produce AC power at or above the quality levels of shoreline power grids . Use inverter output voltage judiciously though ; a battery bank can be quickly depleted with heavy use .

Summary

So to maintain electrical longevity for dry camping excursions , consider adding extra battery storage , a solar array funneled through a high quality charging module and include a pure sine wave inverter or a generator , if necessary , for those instances when AC power is a must . All these devices are readily available in the RV aftermarket . Other possible add-ons and upgrades include a high output alternator a quality battery monitor .
RVers today need not avoid the wonders of those well-hidden travel destinations on the back roads . Perhaps a chat with your local certified RV service shop is in order . Equip well and enjoy total unplugged RVing .
Remember , RVing is more than a hobby , it ’ s a lifestyle !
