The Odessa Chambliss Center of Bethune-CooRman University officially opened doors on February 6 , 2009 under the name Odessa Chambliss Wellness Center . On Thursday , February 7 , 2013 the Center was renamed Odessa Chambliss center For Health Equity to expand its Focus and partnerships in the community .

The center is named For Odessa Chambliss , the mother of B-CU alumna and Trustee Ms . Lucille O ' Neal , mother of celebrity and Former NBA player Shaquille O ' Neal . Ms . Chambliss died in 1996 From ovarian cancer and the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund was created by her Family to honor her commitment to God and medicine .
The primary goal of the Center is to improve health disparities , social justice and social determinants of health among target populations in order to decrease racial / ethnic disparities in
illness , injury and death related to illnesses such as diabetes , heart disease , stroRe , and influenza . The Center worRs closely with local community agencies to disseminate information and conduct educational programs related to chronic illnesses , domestic violence , and substance abuse .
The Odessa Chambliss center ' s programs are : Tobacco Prevention and Cessation that includes expert counseling and Free nicotine replacement , Baby & Me Tobacco Free For pregnant mothers that smoRe , Diabetes Prevention Program , Healthy Life Weight Management , Ovarian & Gynecological Cancer awareness Campaign , Maternal Health Promotion , SicRle Cell Anemia screenings and awareness , Free personal health that include biometric assessments For B-CU students , Faculty and staff . The Center also houses a Free clinic For the worRing / uninsured called Volusia Volunteers in Medicine .
