PAGE 16 PROGRAM SUCCESS – OCTOBER 2009 “ Take a Stand !” Drug Awareness Event Promises Education and Fun
MELBOURNE – Children and teens throughout Brevard County are invited to join in the fun at the “ Take a Stand !” Youth Drug Awareness Event on Oct . 16-17 while just saying ‘ no ’ to drugs and alcohol . participate in a panel discussion on drug activity and violence . The Melbourne Police Department will be on hand to provide fingerprinting and Health First will produce picture IDs of the children .
Scheduled days before the start of Red Ribbon Week , the locally sponsored event aims to inform area youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol use while providing them with a day filled with fun and entertaining activities .
Participants can register for the event from 4 p . m . to 6 p . m . Friday , Oct . 16 at the community center in Lipscomb Street Park , 3316 Monroe St ., Melbourne . All ages are invited to a lecture by Air Force Master Sgt . Rene Rubiella , founder of Operation NOW , will immediately follow in the park ’ s community center at 6 p . m .
The event continues on Saturday , Oct . 17 , with a fun day from 10 a . m . to 2 p . m . in the community center . There will be entertainment and food as well as information to help parents build positive self-esteem in their children . Area adults and children also will
“ We are reaching out to our youth in an effort to educate them on the pitfalls that come with getting involved with drugs while also showing them the benefits to living a positive , drug-free life ,” said Sandra Pelham , chairperson of the Powell Subdivision Neighborhood Watch Program and event coordinator .
Powell Subdivision Neighborhood Watch Program is sponsoring the event along with Club Esteem , the Lipscomb Street Park Program and the neighborhood watch organizations for Faith Landing , Briarwood Park , and Grambling Park .
