The Christian Reader November 2006 37 FLAVOR OF LOVE – WHO CARES? Finishing out its second season, Flavor of Love is rated the number one show viewed by Black America, out ranking even Monday Night Football. The ratings reported that one out of three Blacks watched the show. What does that say about us? A show that accentuates everything negative in our culture, from gold teeth to vulgar mouths; hoochie dressing gold-diggers, and ignorance combined with low self-esteem, just to name a few. You could not pack more Black exploitation in a single hour show. Yet we watched Flavor of Love… we did it in great numbers, we took it to work and to every one of our gathering spots to be top of our conversation chart. My question about Flava Flav and his show Flavor of Love is Who Cares? Who Cares that Flavor of Love adds to the long list of TV shows aired that portrays Blacks at the lowest levels of society? Our men, our women - sex craved, uncontrollable, uneducated, unskilled… is this how we date – no wonder few of us are in relationships that lead to marriage. Who Cares about the fact that these shows are not just watched for entertainment purposes but also act as teaching tools for impressionable minds? In case one has not noticed, our children are acting out the images and behavior patterns they see on TV. Who Cares that our children are not disciplined? Who Cares that our children lack the necessary skills to acquire gainful employment? Who Cares that a great number of our children are ending up in prison? Who Cares about our children not learning in school and the high pregnancy rate? Who Cares about our children being on drugs? If you don’t care about your children – then No One Cares. If you think someone else cares – then You Are Wrong. The world watches and laughs at you and your children. They speak words of concern and behind your back utter disgust. The world turns today with very little assistance from Black America. Who Cares? No one cares that we fail and not prosper. No one cares that our neighborhood becomes violent combatant ghettos. No one cares that you get shot, robbed, or raped. If you don’t care – No One Cares. The world is saying to you “If you LIKE it – I LOVE it! The time has come for us to care more. We need to stop looking at the world as a whole and start looking at the smaller world – our immediate family. Charity begins at home. We must concentrate on the needs of our children and make sure they are met. We should care that they are educated, well rounded in their thinking, driven by a purpose and goals, and understand the pit-falls in life. We must love our children with the kind of love that makes them love and share love that leads to marriage and future strong families. You cannot make a difference in this world nor change society until you make a difference in your own home. Time-out for the mindset of “It’s All Good”. We cannot continue to take to heart the filthy TV shows, comic views, and rap music and think it will not affect us and our children. Trash IN – Trash OUT. The Bible says “Can a man take fire to his bosom and not be burned?” It’s sad that we must teach our children to watch the masses… and go the other way. Strong families build strong communities. Nothing says you care more than a stable, well-rounded and productive family. The Christian Reader welcomes your articles, church and community news, special events and advertisements.
