The FLAJAX Club was established in 1930 by a group of successful and prominent African American businessmen and leaders in Jacksonville , Florida . The FLAJAX Club was founded on the principles of Leadership , Integrity and Fidelity . Their spouses are the FLAJILrs . In 1930 these African American businessmen had a strong desire to share their business skills and experience to organize a club that prompted businessmen to execute business-to-business endeavors . These men also desperately wanted to provide the community with African American male leadership , stress the importance of higher education and , share their own experiences , wisdom and knowledge .
The FLA JAX Club ' s current President is retired Naval Officer and Real Estate Broker James " Drew " Andrews . The Vice President is Dr . Charles E . Simmons III . Other members are Samuel Allen Jr ., George Barnes , Romell Brown , Sr ., Troy Canady , Tommy Chandler , Carl Davis , Jean Downing , John Edwards , Neil Frink , Kenan Godfrey , Jerry Iszard , Jr ., George Marshall , Edgar Mathis L . Sr ., Mario Payne , Robert Porter , Edward H . Robinson , Jr ., Henry Sellers , Warner Singleton , Dozell Varner and , Delaney L Williams Sr ..
The club continues to be a pillar in the community today and enjoys a position of prominence in the civic , social and cultural activities of African Americans in the community . The FLAJAX Club is the oldest and most respected social and civic club in the community . The FLAJAX Club provides mentor ship to young men via the Big Brothers and Big Sisters , Communities in Schools , the Mayor ' s Mentoring program , Achievers for Life and , other entities . The club also provides scholarship funds and supports other local programs in raising scholarship funds for local students . The club meets regularly at its clubhouse on Fernandina Avenue in Jacksonville , Fl .
When the club was established one of the club ' s priorities was to create a formal , social event in which African Americans could attend on an annual basis . That event is the annual FLAJAX Club Christmas Dance now called the annual FLAJAX Club Christmas Ball . The club has held the event since its inception and has not missed a year from hosting the formal affair . This year the FLAJAX Club will celebrate its 87 th annual Christmas Ball on Friday , December 30 , 2016 at 8:00 p . m . at The Double Tree Hotel By Hilton in Downtown Jacksonville .
