The 50th anniversary of the signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act was celebrated by U . S . Representative Corrine Brown and Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown with a reception honoring Congressman James E . Clyburn at the Historic Ritz Theatre and Museum . Both the Congresswoman and the Mayor are treasured longtime friends of Congressman Clyburn , the third highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives . Angela Spears , Special Assistant to Mayor Alvin Brown kept the stellar program on schedule from beginning to end without a moment for lulls . The program opened with magnificent voices from the choir of Day Spring Baptist Church , Reverend Henry Rhim , Pastor . Sandra Morene the Florida Commissioner for the Gullah-Geechee Heritage Corridor along with the representatives for the Pan Hellenic Council of Greek Organizations each presented Rep . Clyburn with expressions of appreciation from their groups . For the 400 crowd swellers who showed up it was a beautiful Sunday evening that will be long remembered . James E . Clyburn's name has been chiseled in civil rights as an activist from the time when he was 12 years old , and he worked with Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . as leader of the Student NonĀ­ Violent Coordinating Committee ( SNCC ).
Jim Clyburn was in his senior year at South Carolina State when he met and fell head over heels in love with fellow student , Emily England , for sharing half of her hamburger with him upon his release from jail for his participation in a civil rights demonstration at the South Carolina State Capital . A born leader , Congressman Clyburn was one of the Orangeburg Seven organizers , leading one of the largest protests in the South . He became a high school teacher , along the way , he served as director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps , executive director of SC Farm Workers , organized the Big Brother and Big Sister program for African American children in the state and even more . In 1992 after three attempts for elected office in the state he was elected to Congress , becoming the first African-American
