30 years . She is member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority , Inc ., a service organization whose motto is " Service to all mankind ". Additionally , she was appointed to the City of Lakeland CiviService Board and was recently selected as its Chair . She is a board member of the Polk Education Foundation , Harrison School of the Arts Advisory Council and Lakeland Chamber of Commerce . She serves on the Polk Museum of Art Board of Trustees .
Sylvia holds a B . S . in Business Management from Florida Southern College , a Behavior Science certification from Auburn University and she is certified as a Diversity Trainer from George Washington University in Washington , D . C . She has advanced studies at University of South Florida .

An advocate of education Sylvia has a dream to return to school , eventually obtaining a PhD . In meantime she invests in other education . She established a scholarship in honor of her mother in which she has awarded over $ 20,000 to deserving students . In addition she became aware of young man from her church who would be a first----------------------------- generational college student . She not only encouraged him , but paid tuition and housing when his financial aid fell short . If you ask her why did she do that , she would probably say something simple as , " I had the funds , but the true story is she is a believer of the scripture , " To whom must is given , much is required ". This student graduated in 2012 with a degree in Education from Bethune-Cookman University and is pursuing a Master of Education . She may have given a helping hand to this young man , but now he will be able to give a helping hands to 1000 ' s of students .
Sylvia is the wife to Anthony Roberts to whom she has been married for 32 years . They have a son , Eric Anderson ( 31 ) and a daughter , Janae ' Leola ( 24 ). In additional her life is fulfilled with the additions of her daughter-in-law Syreeta who provided the two newest love of her life , granddaughter Laila and grandson Anderson .

" My son Eric currently works for Blackmon Roberts Group , but returned back to school at UCF studying Education to become a teacher . I am very proud of Eric decision to go back to school to become a teacher . My mother would be so proud ; as she desired to be a teacher , but unfortunately was born at a time that dream was not possible . What I learned at my mother funeral is the amount of young people my mother inspired , encouraged and mothered allowed her to have the same impact as being in a class room . Hopefully Eric will carry on that teaching legacy ."
