School to Work courses give students the opportunity to investigate areas of interest that serve as a foundation for careers immediately after high school, for certification and associate’s degree programs, or for 4-year college bound students to identify potential majors. Courses in order that they appear in this section (there is no graduation requirement for School to Work) Career Exploration Jobs for Maine Graduates Precision Machining Blueprint Reading BRCOT Program Options Career Exploration 0.5 credit Grades 10, 11 and 12 This course, highly recommended for sophomores, will help students identify strengths and areas of interest, and match those to appropriate careers. A range of careers will be explored through readings, exciting guest speakers, visual media, and online research. Students will prepare a résumé and a budget that takes into account how income affects lifestyle. The culminating research project will be the compilation of a career portfolio to use as a resource. Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) 1 credit Prerequisites: recommendation from a faculty member or current JMG student, application completion, interview, and final approval of the JMG specialist Students are encouraged and advised in areas of achieving better grades, improving personal outlook and self-esteem, experiencing strong ‘connectedness’ to school, and gaining valuable understanding of multiple pathways to future success. They will explore a range of career options while developing the “employability” skills demanded by the 21st century labor market. Students will learn how to attain a job, be successful, and manage personal finances. In addition, students will develop an understanding of non-profit organizations, philanthropy, and the grant process. JMG students become part of a larger statewide/national organization and will benefit from a personal graduation coach. Precision Machining 0.5 credit Students will complete online curriculum modules in a variety of precision tooling areas of study while receiving in-house mentoring. Internship opportunities and hands-on labs at nearby schools are available for students who perform well in the course.
