A MESSAGE FROM
THE HEADMASTER

Every year the Program of Studies reminds me of how much is possible for Thornton Academy students.
Our core academic offerings are strong, complemented by extracurricular activities, clubs and sports
teams that appeal to a wide range of student interests. Your choices are nearly limitless.
Your education is made up of decisions and directions. As you progress through school, you will
encounter many chances to try new things, meet new people, and gain new skills. I urge you to challenge
yourself, do well in your classes, and get involved with activities that catch your interest. Think about
what you want to accomplish this year, both in the classroom and outside. At TA we strive to create a
school environment that will both support you and challenge you.
This Program of Studies is so extensive that you may feel a little overwhelmed. Know that plenty of help
is available. Consult your school counselor and your teachers, and be sure to involve your parents. Read
the course and program descriptions carefully. Consider your options; make forward-looking choices.
Your choices can influence your future in important ways. At the upper school, your current teachers and
your counselor will recommend courses in your core subjects. Their suggestions are based on what they
know of you as a learner and as a person; consider what they say carefully. At TAMS, Principal Robert
reminds students that their teachers work hard to create an atmosphere where all different types of
learning can take place. Be sure to take advantage of that. Middle school is a time to learn, explore, and
grow.
The Program of Studies contains your building blocks to a successful school experience. Someone
wrote that the secret to success in life is to be ready for opportunity when it comes. A healthy school
partnership — one in which you and your family collaborate with your teachers and counselor — will
result in an academic program that is just right for you, one that will prepare you for whatever exciting
opportunities lie ahead. Best wishes in 2019-20!
