DESIGNING YOUR SCHEDULE
Thornton Academy offers hundreds of courses , so it is reasonable to feel overwhelmed . It ’ s all about finding the right courses for you — depending on your class year , accounting for the courses you have already taken , and considering your plans for your future . Follow these steps to choosing your courses .
Step 1 : Talk with your current teachers in each subject to get their recommendations for you .
Select courses that will provide an appropriate academic challenge and which will keep you on track for graduation requirements and post-secondary plans ( college , vocational training , military and / or employment ).
Step 2 : Be sure you understand what credits you will need to graduate : |
English : 4 credits |
Mathematics : 3 credits |
Wellness : 1.5 credits |
History : 3 credits |
Science : 3 credits |
Fine Arts : 1 credit |
An additional minimum of 6.5 credits must be completed in elective classes . |
Step 3 : Talk with your teachers and your parents / guardians
Identify courses you still need for graduation , including those in Arts and Wellness . Consider all recommendations made by your current year teachers . Check any prerequisites . There are many options for meeting requirements ; pick the courses that best fit your interests and abilities .
Step 4 : Post-Grad Plans
Do you plan to attend college ? If so , you may need foreign language classes also .
Do you plan to learn a trade ? Check out the options on School-to-Work and the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology .
Step 5 : Do You Have the Credits ?
Remember – you need at least 22 total credits to graduate . Are you on track ? Students are strongly advised to complete a minimum of 5 credits each year . Note that courses may be ½ credit , 1 credit , or 2 credits , depending on how often they meet . Talk to your school counselor if you need assistance !
