Drifting west to east, from the restless rushes of John Adams’s Chamber Symphony to the gentle lushness of Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Road Trip surveys an oftoverlooked edge of the classical world, where the modern arrived so fast it swept all tradition before it. The timeless works are set against songs by Paul Simon and Stephen Sondheim, along with newly commissioned folk arrangements from Nico Muhly. Featuring our very own Katie Noonan as a guest vocalist, Road Trip is a sonic venture beneath the skies, toward a distant horizon. Samuel Barber Excursions John Adams Chamber Symphony Aaron Copland Appalachian Spring Repertoire also includes songs by Stephen Sondheim, Samuel Barber, Nico Muhly and Katie Noonan. melbournefestival.com.au 51
