As the populations of the world’s great metropolises expand, increasingly the urban landscape is the one most of us call home. Considering cities not as mere statistical entities, this exhibition explores possibilities for creativity and resistance. City Within the City assembles a diverse range of responses drawn from around the world: 17 works by artists and collectives, drawing on architecture, landscape, literature and cinema to create images and video reflecting on the driving narratives of life in the city. Co-curated by Gertrude Contemporary and Seoul’s Artsonje Centre, City Within the City is a flagship cultural enterprise commissioned as part of the diplomatic year of Australia – South Korea Friendship. Having exhibited in Seoul early in 2012, this ambitious project now completes its bi‑national circuit at this year’s Melbourne Festival.
