AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Melbourne Festival is proud to present a very special concert event from Antony and the Johnsons – a transcendental work that sees the sublime vocals of Antony backed by a 44-piece orchestra and an unforgettable visual aesthetic. In January this year, New York’s Museum of Modern Art collaborated with Antony, a 44-piece orchestra, light artist Chris Levine and set designer Carl Robertshaw to create Swanlights – a majestic, orchestral synthesis of luminous imagery, monumental stage design and pure aural beauty that took over the illustrious Radio City Music Hall for one unforgettable night. It was intended as a one-off work of art, never to be seen again – but now Melbourne Festival is proud to present a second showing of Swanlights. A concert like no other, Swanlights is a soaring hymn of love and loss, a reverie of nature, a celebration of the feminine and ode to our ephemeral place in the world – and, above all, an inspiring showcase for Antony’s distinctive and captivating voice. Standing alone on stage, surrounded by glacial, crystalline structures, resplendent in flickering lasers and dancing holograms, and backed by a full orchestra, Antony channels the eye of a transcendental storm. Swanlights is a show that revels in its aweinspiring scale. Ghostly and singular, Swanlights is sure to be one of the most memorable music events of the year. Warning Laser and haze effects Antony’s film TURNING is also screening, followed by a Q&A session (see page 53).
