Co Broerse & Gerrit Schreurs AUSTRALIAN Premiere The Schönberg Ensemble Conducted by Reinbert De Leeuw A momentous musical occasion as one of the 20th century’s most groundbreaking ensembles presents two distinct concerts at Hamer Hall of composer György Ligeti who was mentor to and collaborator with The Schönberg Ensemble for many years. Members of The Schönberg Ensemble are also performing with Chamber Music Australia on Sunday 12 October. See page 21 for details. Composer Reinbert de Leeuw formed The Schönberg Ensemble in 1974. It quickly gained a reputation as one of the most radical classical musical groups of the time, its repertoire centering on composers of the Second Viennese School such as Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, great, innovative musicians whose music had largely been ignored until then. “Lusty bravos greeted the dynamic performance of the concerto, brilliantly conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw.” The New York Times 34 years on and the internationally renowned Ensemble remains true to its original repertoire but has expanded it to include works from the entire 20th and these early years of the 21st century.
