Annav Kooij AUSTRALIAN Premiere Deborah Hay Dance Company If I Sing to You “I recognise my choreography when I see a dancer’s selfregulated transcendence of her choreographed body within a sequence of movements that distinguishes this dance from another.” Deborah Hay If I Sing To You is a dance that is also a song, music, poetry and voice. It experiments with the effectiveness of non-linear meaning and form. It is held together through innumerable absurdly human moments choreographed and directed to engage the attention of its cast. It comes to life through their performance intelligence and aesthetic discernment. For each performance, the dancers have the option to appear in a male or female costume, thus multiplying the dynamic of the choreography through an illusion of momentary contexts and changing structural patterns.
