“There is genius among us.” Music Australia
With music ranging from dark melodramatic laments to wild, raucous songs
of rosy merriment, Bregovic and selected members of his Wedding & Funeral
Band revel in the inimitable sound of the Balkans. On a smaller scale to his
State Theatre extravaganza, this passionate and exhilarating concert offers the
chance to get up close to Bregovic and the band. Embark on a hearty musical
journey through central Europe.
Goran Bregovic is also presenting Tales & Songs for Weddings & Funerals
with his full band as part of the Festival. See page 29 for details.
Ross McLennan is one of Australia’s quietly acclaimed singer-songwriters. For
his Festival debut, this home recording pop pundit and former Snout frontman
presents songs from his acclaimed and accomplished release Sympathy for the
New World as well as his impressive back catalogue.
With their dark soul textures and grandiose alt-rock flourishes, McLennan’s
finely crafted songs open up labyrinthine worlds of meaning, association and
possibilities: sometimes witty, sometimes melancholic, always unexpectedly
spectacular, introspectively epic songs.
McLennan is one of the few truly original indie songwriters in the country.
His latest, stunning record Sympathy for the New World charts dizzying
artistic progress and has turned a new generation of listeners on to his
twisted pop precocity.
“Dancers filled the aisles!” The New York Times
“McLennan excels with this stream of musical
consciousness, forging a new strain of languid
psychedelia from off-kilter strings and spidery
guitars, all spilling harmonic colours outside the
lines.” The Age
