Fabio Ongarato WORLD Premiere 21:100:100 Presented by Melbourne International Arts Festival and Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces “When we separate music from life we get art.” John Cage 21:100:100 features 100 works by 100 sound artists produced in the 21st century. This exhibition is the first significant survey in Melbourne to explore and chronicle the extraordinary developments that have occurred in contemporary sound art. Today, sound art and experimental music enjoy an infrastructure all of their own, with journals, labels, music festivals and websites devoted to critical and creative discussion. Sound art and contemporary art’s origins are both firmly planted in a shared spirit of enquiry and experimentation, and while the discussion of their relationship is a lively one, this exhibition will be the first of its kind to present the full breadth of sound art’s many threads to Melbourne audiences. 21:100:100 was developed by Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces in collaboration with internationally acclaimed Australian artists Oren Ambarchi and Marco Fusinato. It includes works made in the last eight years chronicling new directions and innovations in sound art. These works will be played on headphones suspended within the gallery, designing a space for the visitor to pick their way through sound art’s many and varied aural and conceptual evolutions. music festival context. It is, however, surprising that despite contemporary visual art and sound art’s many shared theoretical and creative concerns, there have been few attempts to explore this intersection through the presentation of sound work within the gallery context. 21:100:100 provides a unique and crucial opportunity to fully engage with sound art, and to trace its varied thematic threads and innovative stylistic developments.
