Kartik
Seshadri
accompanied by Arup Chattopadhyay
Displaying true mastery and exploring the depth of
traditional Hindustani classical music, Kartik Seshadri and
Arup Chattopadhyay create a remarkable performance of
expressive beauty, rich tonal sensibility and extraordinary
rhythmic intricacy
Kartik Seshadri is a world-renowned sitar virtuoso, composer, educator
and the foremost disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Notably, Seshadri
collaborated on the Orion project with composer Philip Glass, which was
presented at Melbourne Festival in 2005. For this incredible concert, he is
accompanied by Arup Chattopadhyay, premier disciple of maestro Pandit
Shankar Ghosh and one of the most outstanding and sought after tabla
artists of the younger generation.
From the spiritual to the spirited, the hallmark of Indian classical music is
the spontaneity and rapport of the improvisatory process. It is a unique
collaboration exploring the moment of the performance and is not a rehearsed
piece. The artists work together to create a complex exploration of possibilities
within the tradition of Hindustani classical music.
Kartik Seshadri is also performing at Frankston Arts Centre. See page 63 for
details.
“The mood here was sensual, even blissful …
with the piece ending in an ecstatic cloud of
swirling notes.” The Washington Post
Indian classical music is based on two distinct ideas of the raga and
tala. Raga(s) are the precise melodic forms that serve as the tonal basis
for improvisation. A raga is introduced with a slow, non-metric opening
movement and is followed by two freer movements, wherein a pulse is
discernible. The tala is typically introduced in the fourth movement when
the tabla joins.
