Danielle SHARP
Marketing Staff Assistant
Detroit Metro Convention &
Visitors Bureau
Detroit, Michigan
Danielle Sharp, a 2011 Professional
Writing graduate, is putting her
skills to work in Michigan’s largest
city. Her position at Detroit Metro
Convention & Visitors Bureau
(DMCVB) provides many opportunities to ?ex her PW muscles. Sharp works with
DMCVB’s leisure publication, Visit Detroit, contributes to media relations, and
works with the organization’s social media and web presences. “Projects I work on
vary in length, tone, purpose, and audience. It’s rewarding to work with people who
trust me to make their ideas sound good on paper and online,” Sharp explained.
Sharp has sound advice for job seekers: “Don’t settle! Recent graduates are assets to
employers, so don’t accept a job you’re overquali?ed for.”
Jonathan VEREECKE
Content Project Editor
at Cengage Learning
Farmington Hills,
Michigan
Jonathan Vereecke graduated in
2009 with a bachelor’s degree in
English and an additional major in
Professional Writing, concentrating
in editing and publishing. Vereecke
currently works as a content project editor at Cengage Learning in Farmington Hills,
Michigan and says that his favorite part of his job is project management. “I like
taking a process from beginning to end. In this case, I take a rough manuscript and
process it into a book.” Vereecke explained that PW allowed him to gain focus while
also ?nding an industry he would love to work in. “Nothing will happen to you if
you don’t do something; volunteer and apply for competitions. Set your sights on
temporary or contracting positions. These will keep your résumé active and also lead
to more interviews,” he said.
