With an acoustic and visual design configuration offering intimacy , optimal sightlines , and traditional theatre-style seating , the main theatre at Montreal ’ s L ’ Astral accommodates 300 people and standing room for 600 .
The theatre recently added a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console to complement its existing Yamaha M7CL . Solotech of Montreal was responsible for the addition of the CL5 , accompanied by a Rio3224-D input / output box , two Ri8-D input boxes , and one Ro8-D output box .
“ We chose the Yamaha CL5 because of rider acceptance , reliability , and the 25-bus plus matrix ,” says Stephane Gauthier , technical director . “ The theatre has a Yamaha M7CL that we retrofitted with Dante cards and now use as the monitor console , so familiarity also played a role . The Dante protocol is a nice feature that is appreciated by visiting engineers .”
For some time , Senior Pastor Granville McKenzie of Toronto church Faith Sanctuary hadn ’ t been happy with the sound in the worship space . Stone walls and other reflective surfaces diminished speech intelligibility and musical nuance , and consistent coverage was a constant challenge .
The solution to the problem came in the form of a RoomMatch loudspeaker system from Bose Professional . Westbury National installed the system , consisting of three hangs of four RoomMatch enclosures each , with four RoomMatch RMS215 subwoofers flown above the centre array . Three more RMS218 subs are mounted underneath the stage with six more RoomMatch enclosures providing under-balcony coverage and two more used as choir fills . Nine networked PowerMatch PM8500N amplifiers power the entire system .
“ We are extremely happy with how the sound has turned out ,” says Pastor McKenzie . “ Every word is completely intelligible , and the music is clear and powerful .”

Ed Sheeran is in the midst of a three-continent , 108-show ÷ (“ Divide ”) Tour . Supported only by his acoustic guitar and a custom loop pedal , Sheeran relies solely on his infectious music and charismatic persona to sell out A-level arenas months in advance . At the behest of FOH engineer Chris Marsh , they are using a Meyer Sound LEO Family linear reinforcement system for the fifth consecutive year .
“ Consistency is absolutely key with Ed , and with the Meyer system I am entirely confident it will sound the same everywhere ,” says Marsh , who placed end-fire arrays of 1100-LFC subs at both ends of the stage . “ With Ed , I need frequencies around 50 Hz to be really punchy and uniform everywhere , and this design works extremely well with the 1100-LFC .”
FOH engineer Dani Munoz relies on the Waves eMotion LV1 Live Mixer when on tour with Canadian reggae fusion band Magic !
“ My set-up includes a dual 27-inch touchscreen set-up , with one Waves SoundGrid Extreme server , one Mac Mini running Windows 10 via Boot Camp , and three DigiGrid IOX audio interface units , and it ’ s all cleanly packed into flight cases with the right dimensions and weight to avoid oversize charges at the airport !” says Munoz . “ Finding the same gear in every country we go to is a big challenge , and flying with my own console , in the past , was simply not possible . Consistency from performance to performance was compromised as a result of this . That is , until now .”
