more comfortable . I ’ m hoping to give that room a facelift this year .” Considering the room ’ s success and dedicated clientele , though , he ’ ll mainly just be addressing aesthetic wear and tear .
Planet also just underwent a reno in Studio 14 , for which the short-term plan is to offer a lowcost room for clients not requiring a full day of studio time . “ Oftentimes clients will say , ‘ We ’ d love to come there , but we don ’ t need a big space ,’” Cinelli shares , “ so I ’ m going to give myself a year to see if that room will work . The vocal booth is about 8 x 10 and the control room about 14 x 14 ft . A lot of our young engineers and assistants call me up and say , ‘ I ’ ve got this artist , I don ’ t have much of a budget , but I ’ d like to bring them into the studio .’ Now we accommodate them in the big rooms , but it ’ s overkill for what they want to do , so I ’ m hoping 14 will cater to a whole new , younger clientele .”
Studio 14 will also cater to voiceovers , which make up a portion of the studio ’ s business , Cinelli says , citing Planet ’ s recent work for Ice Age on Ice . While it ’ s not their main business , they do get inquiries fairly consistently , and frankly , the set-up of Planet Studios is as viable for corporate and broadcast applications as it is for artists recording music . Ultimately , Studio 14 will make scheduling easier , particularly for out of town clients looking to tap into Montreal ’ s large pool of musical and and voiceover talent .
In the end , Cinelli is extremely pleased with the recent upgrades . “ I ’ m working on an album now where the artist said , and this happens more and more , ‘ I ’ m going to cut the beds at the studio and do all my vocals at home .’ But it ’ s already happened a couple of times where the artist starts to record at home and goes , ‘ No , this isn ’ t working , I ’ m going back to Planet .’”
It ’ s about comfort , he says – about having faith in professionals , forgetting about the technical process , and solely focusing on art and creativity . Service and comfort are key , Cinelli summarizes , and frankly , that ’ s been the basis of Planet Studios ’ business and enduring success since day one .
