Last year we did an amazing direct-to-disc project called wecut-
wax. We had three artists come in and we recorded them directly to
lacquer disc using one Brauner tube microphone, a Chandler Germa-
nium mic pre, and a Neumann lathe. We then captured to high-res
digital directly from the lacquer master via a UAD Apollo, which has
amazing converters – 99 per cent as good as my dCS converter but at
a fraction of the price. It’s a permanent piece in our lathe room. We’re
looking towards doing more projects like that. They don’t make us any
money but they are incredibly fun and interesting to do.
