Dr. Ericka S. Lowe Bringing Smiles To Andros " " Ambitious, hardworking, and compassionate about serving God and the community describes Dr. Ericka S. Lowe. She was born in Nassau, Bahamas and spent her summers with her grandparents and aunt in Exuma. This is why Dr. Lowe calls both islands her home. Her childhood had humble beginnings with summers on an island with no cable, no TV, and no modern conveniences. Despite these challenges, she had the best time in Exuma and made some amazing lifelong friendships. Imagine daily walks on the beach before sunrise, fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden, well water, and fun-times in the sand in the afternoon with best friends. “We slept with the doors open” because there was no crime. “We were happy because we had true love”. Her grandmother taught her “love is an action word”. A typical day in the life of Dr. Lowe growing up started with prayer, bible study, and family meals together. Her mom, Eugenia Lowe, believes that a child could not learn if she did not eat and made the most amazing breakfast in the morning. Her dad, Cyril Lowe, made sure she laughed before going to school every day, often repeating her favorite jokes over, and over, and over again. “Laughter is good medicine!” Once the school day began, Dr. Lowe was a serious student. Quiet and focused. Most of her parent-teacher reports from Kingsway academy all said the same thing. Excellent student and needs to participate more in class. This was a great surprise to her mom who said that she talked a lot at home and always asked a lot of questions. In high school, Dr. Lowe transferred to Saint Augustine’s College following the footsteps of her older sister and is proud to be a graduate of THE BIG RED MACHINE! Good times and fond memories of being the yearbook photographer, participating on the debate team, and a participant in Junior Achievement. Evenings and weekends were busy at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she was in the choir, Girls Brigade, and Vice President of the Youth Ministry. It never felt like long hours or hard work because of the friends that she made along the way, many of whom are still in her life today. During school holidays, Dr. Lowe worked part-time jobs starting at the age of 14 years old. She worked at the UBS Bahamas Ltd. with her dad in the summers and Kelly’s during the Christmas breaks. She also worked at the dental office of Dr. Nigel Lewis and this in when she fell in love with dentistry. The four dentists at this office, Dr. Nigel Lewis, Dr. Kirk Lewis, Dr. Renae Peet Inferenta, and Dr. Marsha Bethel were great mentors for her during high school, college, and residency. They always made time in their busy schedule to meet with her, answer questions honestly, and guide her on the long journey through dental school. Her family dentist, Dr. Anthony Davis was the first one to encourage her to pursue Endodontics. Her employment with Dr. Ellen Strachan was vital in giving her the experience and confidence she needed to pursue her specialty. Dr. Strachan was a mentor and friend to the family who allowed her to complete as many root canals as she wanted. What a great opportunity! Page 6
