Moloyashree Hashmi: The Show Must Go On
This seems to be straight from a Bollywood script, however sadly
this happened in real life. It was the winter or of 1988-89. After
eighteen years the municipal elections in Ghaziabad were being
held. From the Sahibabad area Ramanand Jha then in the CITU was
fighting on an independent ticket and Mukesh Sharma, a so called
independent candidate but supported by a mainstream political
party, were among the many candidates from Ward No.4.
For the past many years the trade union movement under the
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) had gained in strength. Just a
month ago, in November 1988, there was a 7-day industrial strike.
It was an unprecedented success. In fact Jana Natya Manch had
made a play Chakka Jaam in support of the strike. After the strike
this play was somewhat reworked and was performed in the name
