CONSERVATORIES
PRO Installer has teamed up with celebrity
builder, Craig Philips, to cover industry topics
relevant to you. Last month, Craig gave you
his top tips for fitting windows. In this issue
he advises on conservatory installation…
Craig says: “Having a
conservatory installed
is a big decision for
the majority of homeowners, which is why
they want to take the
time to get it right.
Installers need to think
about timescale and causing minimal upheaval to
the homeowners’ lives.
Most people choose to
add conservatories to their
homes to add space and
value. They are available in
a variety of different styles
and materials to suit individual preferences.
Lean-to conservatories
are a popular choice; three
walls and a sloping roof
erected against an existing property wall. More
elaborate is the Edwardian
design, which has a pitched
roof and boasts bold rectangular shapes.
Often, the size of the
conservatory means that it
does not necessarily need
planning permission, which
is great for the homeowner
and means that they can
add an extra room to their
house quickly and effective.
It is important to remember
that more expansive additions will be subject to the
same laws as the majority
of construction projects.
My tips will outline all
the basics and ensure that
your customers are satisfied with the end result!
• First the site needs to be
prepared - the foundations dug and drainage
installed with concrete
poured in to create the
foundations. For certain
designs and styles, a
dwarf cavity wall will
need to be built. Next,
the floor slab needs to
be prepared and insulation should be added to
this and the cavity wall.
• It is so important that
a damp proof course is
fitted into the brick and
block cavity walling,
making sure that the
