The Awards, in their 60th year in 2018, celebrate organisations that go the extra mile to keep their workers and workplaces healthy and safe. This year, for the first time, any organisation can enter its employees for the Champion Awards – wheth- er or not the business is applying for an Internation- al Safety Award. Also for the first time, organisations can apply for two new awards which are designed to recognise em- ployee wellbeing initiatives and occupational health and safety innovations imple- mented by organisations across the world. The awards opened for applications on 3 October to organisations of all sizes, types and sectors – both members of the British Safe- ty Council and non-mem- bers, in the UK and interna- tionally. The International Safety Awards 2018 will recognise and reward organisations which have demonstrated a true commitment to achiev- ing high standards of health and safety during the 2017 calendar year. Last year, 535 organisations from a wide range of industries, coun- tries and continents won an International Safety Award. New Awards The Employee Wellbeing Initiative Award will recog- nise and reward organisa- tions that have implemented initiatives that promote and demonstrate a proactive and effective approach to im- proving worker wellbeing. The Health and Safety Inno- vation Award will recognise and reward organisations that can demonstrate fresh and innovative approach to improving health and safety at work. Champion Awards The British Safety Council is again running two awards to recognise individual employees who have gone beyond the call of duty to help ensure the health and safety of their colleagues. The Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award – for non-health and safety personnel aged 24 or over – and the Young Health and Safety Champi- on of the Year Award – for non-health and safety per- sonnel aged under 24 – al- low organisations to nomi- nate individual employees PROPERTY RENOVATION HOTSPOTS Barking and Dagenham have been revealed as the top location for an increase in renovation applica- tions in the past two years (114%). Looking at national planning ap- plication statistics taken from Gov. uk, the top ten property renovation hotspots revealed by home service marketplace Plentific.com include several London commuter zones. In fact, the top five areas are all with- in commuting distance from the capital city, with the majority being north east boroughs. Barking and Dagenham take the top spot, with an impressive 114% increase in property renovation applications. Luton shows the second highest increase of 59%, with Milton Keynes in third with a 54% in- crease, and Wokingham taking the fourth spot with a 42% increase in planning applications. Just one area in the north of England made the top ten renova- tion hotspots list: Hull. At number seven on the list, it saw a 40% increase in planning applications for renovations from 2015. Further down is Poole on the south coast. This area has proved popular with homeowners, and comes in eighth with an increase of 36% in planning applications in the past two years. Number nine on the list is Bournemouth, with a 34% increase since 2015. With these two locations side by side, this data shows a boom in renovation projects in the south, with Bournemouth carrying the overspill from Poole. On the other end of the table, Islington showed a 28% decrease in planning applications submit- ted, the largest decrease for both the London and National areas. Tower Hamlets showed the second largest decrease of 18%, again for both London and National statistics. Plentific.com who have given their time to improve health, safety and wellbeing at work. All the winners of the awards will be invited to celebrate their suc- cess at the spectacular 60th International Safety Awards Gala Dinner which will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Friday 27 April 2018.
