MENTAL HEALTH IS EVERYONE ’ S BUSINESS

The British Safety Council unveiled its mental health training portfolio on the eve of World Mental Health Day . The courses are designed to help businesses and their employees start conversations about mental health issues and build a positive mental health culture in their organisations .
Since 1957 , the charity and membership organisation has been campaigning to keep workers healthy and safe . Led by founder James Tye , the British Safety Council contributed to the creation of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974 .
It also helped to establish the British Wellness Council in 1979 , which dealt with issues such as repetitive strain injuries and stress . More recently , it has focused its activities on workplace health and well-being , including mental health . In January 2017 , British Safety Council helped to launch the Mates in Mind programme , which provides information , support and training on mental
health for the construction industry .
The British Safety Council ’ s mental health training portfolio , first announced at its Annual Conference last month ( October ), has been developed in response to public recognition that poor mental health constitutes a significant problem in workplaces in Britain . In fact :
• Three out of four employees say they have experienced poor mental health ( source : Business in the Community National Employee Mental Wellbeing Survey 2016 ).
• Every week , more than 100 people take their own lives in the UK ( source : Mind ).
The British Safety Council has used its extensive training expertise to develop the following mental health courses :
• Mental health ‘ Start the Conversation ’ for all employees – which is immediately available .
• Mental health ‘ Train the Facilitator ’ which enables staff to deliver ‘ Start the Conversation ’ in-house . The course is immediately available .
• Mental health ‘ Managing the conversation ’ for line managers . To be launched in January 2018 .
• Mental Health First Aid qualification . To be launched in January 2018 .
Speaking to the British Safety Council , Professor Dame Carol Black , a leading expert and a passionate campaigner promoting good mental health in the workplace , has urged SME ( small and medium enterprise ) owners and managers to get on board with the mental health agenda .

Opportunities in Secured by Design contracts

When Secured by Design accreditation is specified in a sliding patio contract , PatioMaster Secure is the answer because it provides a PatioMaster door that meets this most demanding of standards .
Secured by Design is the official UK Police flagship initiative that combines the principles of ‘ designing out crime ’ with physical security . Secured by Design accredited PatioMaster doors have five enhanced security features that mean they can meet the stringent requirements of Secured by Design .
Interlock bolts lock the sliding panel to the fixed one and ensure the two cannot be forced apart . A full width security head rail runs across the top of the opening panel to prevent it being lifted from the track . A full height security keep rail supports the sliding door at each corner . A PAS24 handle is designed to withstand sustained manual attack and has an enhanced back-plate for even greater security levels . Finally , an anti-bump cylinder prevents the lock cylinder being bumped .
The Secured by Design accreditation is just one example of the many benefits that PatioMaster doors offer .
