10 NOVEMBER 2013 PRO INSTALLER PRO NEWS www.proinstaller.co.uk KILN IS BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER – AND GREENER TOO Synseal’s Global Glass division can now toughen twice the glass at its K2 plant in Blackburn, all faster, to a better quality – and save energy – thanks to an advanced new furnace there. The Tamglass ProConvection unit is both 40% bigger and 40% faster, doubling the existing capacity at the Lancashire facility. It is now capable of processing a greater number of glass sheets given the furnace’s impressive size (4,800mm x 2,440mm), which is significantly bigger than the previous plant. The Global Glass plant at Blackburn specialises in creating insulated glass units for roof glazing applications, including the premium quality Celsius performance glass range. This specialisation means that 100% of the glass units produced have to be toughened; this investment was therefore key to improving performance. Synseal Head of Marketing Mark Schlotel says, “This furnace is one of the fastest and most advanced on the market. It represents a very significant investment for Synseal and K2 but it will be more than worth it in the benefits we know it will bring to our customers. As well as keeping all our products very cost-effective, it will also give improved visual quality with reductions in bow, ripple and edge lift.” Investment in specialist training set to increase Twenty staff at leading timber merchant, Arnold Laver, are working through the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) Diploma in a move that will see the Sheffield-based company’s production, sales and technical staff improve their levels of knowledge and customer support and the company increase its fire doors business. The FDIS Diploma comprises a series of online education modules that have been researched and authored by industry experts, which can be studied at a pace to suit individual learners and is completed by passing the FDIS Diploma examination, which is taken at a local centre. The Arnold Laver staff are working through the modules with the aim of improving their awareness of the issues around specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors. It is planned for some of the staff to move onto the second stage Joe Trueman Trade counter beats longstanding sales record Truemans, the fast growing northern trade counter chain, has reported its record sales week, selling £120k across its three depots during the last week of September. of the FDIS programme by becoming FDIS Certificated Inspectors. Group joinery manager David Oldfield said: “We are committed to ensuring our staff have the knowledge and skills to be able to pro- vide the very best service. This is obviously good for our customers who benefit from our investment. However, it is also going to give us a new revenue stream that will help to grow the business too.” Truemans has been gaining market share for quite some time, steadily building up a loyal following from installers who enjoy the convenience of dealing with a local supplier, and the company is now experiencing a sustained period of significant growth. Managing Director, Joe Trueman, comments on the record sales week: “2013 has been a particularly good year for Truemans. We opened a new branch in Doncaster last month, which has already gone down a storm with local tradesman, and our long-standing Burnley and Sheffield branches have both seen an increase in volume. Volume is coming in from new customers but also existing customers who are ordering more. We offer free sales and marketing support and this is helping our customers grow, pulling more sales through our depots.” Truemans doesn’t manufacture any of its products; they buy-in very large quantities from some of the country’s largest ‘super-fabricators’, so they can afford to concentrate on offering customers real added value service.
