Restless Echoes Clarrie had ever given her a direct message from the grave, or whatever she liked to call it! “But, now that the subject has come up, there is something I would like to ask.” At Clarrie’s acquiescent murmur, she continued. “When we were kids, my parents took us both to visit an old, timbered, house near Worcester. It was reputed to be haunted. You were as thrilled as I was about the books on black magic found in the attic and the human bones dug up from the garden but when you saw it you changed your mind. You insisted on staying in the car – so were you psychic then? Did you see ghosts there?” Clarrie remembered it vividly. In the ice-cold grip of fear, she’d refused to go anywhere near the old property but, although the atmosphere around it was scary, she confessed that she had not seen anything untoward. Until a few years ago, she had rejected the idea that she might take after her mother, but now that Rowena suggested going there again, she agreed; it would be interesting to see if it still felt the same. Rowena wondered if perhaps Sarah would join them. Why not, Clarrie considered, after Rowena rang off. Visiting haunted sites with her mother would be fascinating – what amazing things they might discover – but she realised there was no point in suggesting it because, deep down, she knew that her mother never pursued those in the afterlife, preferring to keep a low profile in both worlds! 24
