When Sarah arrived home she saw the light flashing on the
answering machine. After rewinding the tape she found two
messages, both for her. The first announced the arrival of a book
she had ordered. The second – she knew his voice immediately
– was from Detective Chief Superintendent Holmes of the local
CID. “Alec here,” the rich deep tones announced. “We have a
problem. You may not be able to help but I’d be grateful if you’d
try. I can send a car for you. Please call back, extension onefive.”
Several times in the past few years Sarah had assisted the
police. They respected her wish for complete privacy and never
