56 POEM Comfort By Anita Cleverly I will arise now and go to the sea, To watch for the swoop of gannets and gulls, To follow the knife-slice peregrine plunge, The bobbing hulls and waltzing vessels; Deep will I drink the sea-sprayed air, the light, The sight of God’s intoxicating, Undulating waters, heaven’s liqueur. I will arise now and go to the sea And wait for you there in my silent watch. Your elemental clothes will soothe and slow, Steady and strengthen my heart’s wild beat. They will wrap me around, swaddle me close, Set my feet on a rock, secure my steps And my lungs will draw long and strong again. I will arise now and go to the sea Search for a new song, a new anthem To sound down the corridors of time and Drown all music but its own, to echo Greater, grander, more glorious notes than Any we coaxed from our paltry stores. And I know I will find my sought song there. I will arise now and go to the sea, Rehearse the royal rhythms given to me. Once more filled, after fire, after fury, Slowly inhaling the vision of glory Before me, I’ll ready my feelings, my frame And my voice, draw myself up to full height, Draw in a deep breath, and go out to sing.
