‘The main churches I have
been to are majority black
churches and that’s just the
way it’s been for me. I did go
to Hillsong for a while and
while it’s strong on Scripture
I didn’t really see much
movement of the Holy Spirit
when I was there.
to my church you’ll find a lot of
generations of families – mothers,
grandparents, children. A lot of the
preaching and teaching is on family
and we might not do some other
areas of preaching and teaching
like finance, for example, because
that’s not what the purpose is,
that’s not the mandate that God has
given my pastor.
‘The purpose of the Hillsong
ministry in Tottenham Court Road
is to be a house or an incubator for
new believers or people who are
transient. It meets that need and
fulfils the purpose that God has
called it for.
‘We have to remember it’s better
to know four or five scriptures and
live them to the core than to be a
jack of it all and not really living the
life. You can be tongue-talking and
demon-bashing but then you gossip
and you’re strife and we have to be
careful.
‘I now attend the Kings Family
Centre in Aveley, Essex. It’s quite
a small family church, and very
evangelical. It has everything as
far as I’m concerned. My pastor
preaches the Word but we are open
to spiritual gifts too. On a Friday
we have a service where we’ll all
pray in tongues and there’ll be
intercession, but then we don’t
normally do that in a Sunday
service.
‘The leader of the church has a
responsibility to fulfil the particular
mandate and calling. My church
is all about family so if you go
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE
UNDERSTAND THAT THE
BIBLE IS THE MENU, NOT THE
MEAL. WE DON’T WORSHIP
THE SCRIPTURES, AND THEY
AREN’T TO TAKE PLACE OF THE
FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT.
STICK TO THE MAIN AND THE
PLAIN THEMES OF SCRIPTURE.
‘I don’t include my church in this
but there are a lot of churches that
are promoted and built on signs
and wonders and what happens
is that you get a lot of people who
are seeking an experience rather
than an encounter with God and
it’s not about that. There’s no point
in having the shouting and the
sweating and the screaming if
when all is said and done you’re not
living the life, you’ve just had an
experience and it’s obvious that you
haven’t had an encounter with God
because your life hasn’t changed.’

YOU’VE JUST HAD AN
EXPERIENCE AND IT’S
OBVIOUS THAT YOU HAVEN’T
HAD AN ENCOUNTER WITH
GOD BECAUSE YOUR LIFE
HASN’T CHANGED.
