Context:
Small Baptist Church
in the north of England
Service:
Main morning service
Preacher:
The pastor, a middle-aged man
Sermon duration :
30 minutes
Key passage:
Luke 7:1–11
Often when we preach, the only feedback we get is
the ‘thanks for a lovely sermon’ comments at the
door. In each issue of Preach, we will take you inside
the mind of an anonymous congregant. We hope
their insights will be a useful learning tool.
T
his sermon is part of a series
on Luke, which is called ‘Faith
in the Gospel of Grace’. The
preacher begins by summing
up the series as being about the
gospel, and that gospel being bigger
than just about salvation, and then
he prays.
He’s moving around a lot at the
front and I’m worried he might trip
on the carpet which isn’t exactly flat.
I love it when the pastor preaches.
I know that I am going to be given
really solid, biblical teaching

and that it will challenge me.
He’s not particularly energetic or
entertaining in his style, but he
brings the Bible to life and he isn’t
boring.
He starts working through the
passage bit by bit, beginning with
some interesting background on
Capernaum – the birthplace of the
prophet Nahum. I didn’t know that.
He reads bits of the passage back to
us often. It is helpful and keeps focus.
The structure of the talk is going
to be fairly straightforward, and it
gives me an idea of where we are.
