Becoming an entrepreneur and launching your own business is the dream of millions. In the United States, hundreds of thousands of new startups are launched each year. Countless more men and women have the dream but never take the plunge.

\In fact, a 2015 Gallup poll shows that approximately one quarter of Americans have considered starting their own business but statistics show that only about 13 percent actually do it. According to the poll, 84 percent of persons who have considered becoming entrepreneurs do not start their own business because they like the security of having a steady income.

This fear of not having a regular income is the number one reason that prospective entrepreneurs do not become self-employed. Interestingly, the next six top barriers to self-employment are fear-based. With this in mind, it is clear that the mindset of an actual entrepreneur is different from that of the rest of the population.

Looking at the seven reasons that individuals who have considered starting a business but don’t do it, it is apparent that non-entrepreneurs are fear-averse when it comes to the thought of stepping out on their own. Their fears are powerful enough to prevent them from taking action. In contrast, actual entrepreneurs either don’t have that same aversion to fear or they are able to overcome it enough that they are able to venture out and join the world of entrepreneurship.

In my experience, this really is the key difference between the mindset of an entrepreneur and a non-entrepreneur. Another important mindset of entrepreneurs is that they do not like someone else placing limitations or constraints upon them. In my case, the dislike of external limitations was strong enough to overcome my fears about being an entrepreneur.
