The Montgomery Academy 1550 Perry Hill Rd, Montgomery, AL (334) 272-8210 • www.montgomeryacademy.org About: The Montgomery Academy is a nonsectarian K-12 school serving the River Region since 1959 whose mission is to develop leaders committed to “honor, scholarship, service and the pursuit of excellence.” These values are central to the curriculum and evident in the supportive environment at The Montgomery Academy. Class Size: The average class size is around 15 students. At MA’s Lower School (grades K-4) there is an extra teacher known as the Instructional Coach who works regularly with the students in each classroom. Career-based Programs: MA’s program is designed to prepare students both academically and socially for life after high school with numerous technology courses, engineering courses, and classes such as Interpersonal Relations that teach leadership and community service skills. Athletics: MA has earned 65 state championships, more than any other public or private school in the River Region. Numerous sports opportunities are available for males and females with over 70% of students participating in one of MA’s athletic teams. Teams include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, cheerleading, softball and volleyball. Many Academy athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level. Coaches and the Athletic Director work closely with student athletes and the NCAA to ensure that all athletic and academic requirements are met. Music/Fine Arts: Appreciation of the arts begins early at the Academy. Weekly exposure to art and music classes begins in kindergarten and continues throughout the students’ academic career. Courses in theater, music, and visual arts are offered in middle and upper levels, and students are allowed opportunities to perform on stage and at various venues. MA’s choral groups have been recognized nationwide, and the speech and debate team is ranked in the top 1% in the nation, winning the state championship more than any other school in Alabama. Academics: Montgomery Academy prepares students to succeed in the most selective colleges and universities. Over 28 Advanced Placement and Honors courses are offered to students, and the vast majority of AP students score a 3 or above on AP exams, qualifying them for college credit. In the fall of 2016, 46 students were recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars based on their test scores. The Kaplan ACT study course is also available after-school and on the weekends for a fee. L8 | Winter 2016 Colleg e Prep: MA has two college advisors and a college advising assistant who work with students and their families during the college admissions process. 100% of Academy graduates go on to attend a four-year college, and over the past five years, MA seniors have earned over $28 million dollars in merit based aid. 86% of the Class of 2016 earned over $9 million in merit based aid. In addition, the Dean of Students, Upper School Director, and Guidance Counselor work to insure graduates have a positive transition to college, even sending care packages to recent graduates during their first year away at college. www.potentialmagazine.com
