Montgomery Academy Speech
& Debate Earns National
Recognition
The National Speech & Debate Association, the honor society for middle and
high school speech and debate, has named its Top 100 schools in the nation
for the 2014-2015 academic year. The Montgomery Academy ranked 72 out of
more than 3,200 schools nationwide.
Members earn points and degrees through the honor society, based on
competitive and service-related activities, ranging from the Degree of Merit
with 25 or more points to the Degree of Premier Distinction with 1,500 or
more points.
“These students and coaches have demonstrated outstanding participation and
achievement in speech and debate activities,” said Executive Director J. Scott
Wunn. “We are pleased to honor them for their hard work and dedication, and
wish them continued success in the coming season.”
Recipient schools are published in Rostrum, the national magazine of high
school speech and debate.
The National Speech & Debate Association is the largest interscholastic speech
and debate organization serving middle school, high school and collegiate
students in the United States. The Association provides competitive speech and
debate activities, high-quality resources, comprehensive training, scholarship
opportunities and advanced recognition to more than 130,000 students and
coaches every year. For 90 years, the National Speech & Debate Association
has empowered more than 1.4 million members to become engaged citizens,
skilled professionals and honorable leaders in our society.
TPS Offers a Taste of College
Trinity hosted “College Day” on Tuesday, September 15, where over 40
colleges and universities attended. This was an outstanding college fair, where
both students and parents were able to attend presentations from college
admission counselors and discuss college admissions with the experts.
Topics covered during Trinity’s College Day included “How to Sell Yourself
during College Admission Interviews,” “How to Make your College Essay Pop,”
“Exploring College Majors,” “Mission Trip Opportunities in College,” and
“NCAA Eligibility Requirements and Rules.” The eventful day culminated with
a browse session in the gym of all the colleges and universities.
Local Students Battle in
Robotics Competition
Middle and high school students from across the
State of Alabama will descend upon Brewbaker
Technology Magnet High School on November 21,
2015 for this exciting VEX Robotics Competition.
VEX Robotic Teams will come together for a nonstop, action-packed day of competition where they
will battle against each other with robots created
from VEX EDR. Participants will square off in
the game VEX Robotics Competition Nothing
But Net, which is played by scoring colored balls
in high and low goals and by elevating robots
in a designated climbing zone. VEX Robotics
Competition Nothing But Net was developed by
VEX Robotics, Inc. and the Robotics Education
& Competition (REC) Foundation, leaders in
educational and competitive robotics.
This VEX Robotics Competition is one in a series
of tournaments supported by the REC Foundation
and various national, regional and local sponsors.
The competition season culminates each spring,
with the top performing teams from local and
state VEX Robotics Competitions competing
against each other at VEX Worlds. At VEX Worlds,
these exemplarily teams will have the opportunity
to challenge their top-ranked peers from over
30 countries around the world, including Brazil,
Canada, China, Colombia, India, Japan, Malaysia,
Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia,
Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and the United
States of America.
While receiving encouragement from college representatives, the students also
learned how to prepare themselves for the college application process. “We
look for students who challenge themselves academically, as you do here at
Trinity,” Furman representative Elizabeth Hawthorne said.
