Eastwood Cross Country Excels at State
Eastwood Cross Country Excels at State
Fall 2017 was an exciting season for the Eastwood cross country team . In the heat of August , a squad of mostly 8th through 10th graders assembled and set ambitious goals , not realizing how hard they would have to work to achieve them . But senior captains Joy Gulley , Carli Culpepper , and Mikey Kometer challenged the ECS Warriors and God blessed their efforts .
The girls squad was made up of very young competitors , most of whom were first- or second-year runners . Nevertheless , the girls became a tight-knit team that won two regular season meets and finished third at state , with eighth grader Josie Powe placing 4th at the varsity championship meet .

Meanwhile , a similarly young but more experienced boys team was on a quest to defend its five straight state titles . In the first meet of the year , Lyman Ward Military Academy and Lee-Scott Academy both left the Warriors in the dust , causing most to write off the young Eastwood team — but not the Warriors themselves . Over the next month , the boys gradually reduced the deficit in standings at each meet . Then at the state meet at Gateway Park in Montgomery , Mikey Kometer and Asa Button placed 4th and 7th , and all seven Eastwood runners crossed the line within a minute and a half to defy the odds and earn their sixth consecutive Alabama Independent Schools Cross Country League Championship .
