giving back
ways to
Christmas is a joyous time, filled with festive
celebrations and so many reasons to count
our blessings. But for some families, the
holidays can be difficult. While it’s easy to get
wrapped up in the holiday frenzy, help your
family focus on the true spirit of the season
by taking some time to give back to others.

Food for Thought
Food Banks need volunteers to sort and store food,
as well as coordinate food and fund drives. And of
course, donations of canned goods, non-perishable
food items and money are always needed. A list of major food
bank organizations throughout Alabama can be found at

The Best Medicine
Many hospitals welcome
volunteers who can
bring some cheer to
long-term patients and
their families. Children’s Hospital
in Birmingham has a long list of
year-round service opportunities,
from leading children’s activities
to welcoming visitors. Donations
of new toys and games are also
appreciated. Go to childrensal.org/
Volunteer-Services to find out more,
or check with your local hospital to
see how you can help.

Meeting the Need
Christmas Clearinghouse programs match up
people who want to help with local families in need.
Check out local opportunities with Hands on River
Region (handsonriverregion.org), or Christmas
Charities Year Round (christmascharitiesyearround.org) for
North Alabama. 211connectsalabama.org is another resource
for locating Christmas assistance programs
throughout the state.
“I think it’s important to give
back because it helps build
our community for success
when we all play a part. By
being a blessing to others,
you are always blessed in
return.”
— Elizabeth Williams,
Volunteer Coordinator
at Baptist Health
