Her mother had a stroke while picking her up from karate class, and Leanne was inspired by the medi- cal team. She shares, “I realized there are those who do not have quickly accessible healthcare, especially in third world countries. As a result of this experience, I am a health rights advocate.” At the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, Leanne is the president of Health Occupants of the Students of America, and founder of Heroes of Health, a club she started to fundraise for those in third world countries to get better access to healthcare. Leanne is a member of several honor societies, and has received numerous awards at both local and national science fairs. She is also a member of the soccer team, and has been playing piano since the age of three. “Being involved in extra- curriculars is a way for me to meet and socialize with people who share the same interests I have,” she explains. what’s next leanne jeong “My ultimate goal is to set up a non-profit organization to build hospitals in third world countries, while still working as a neurosurgeon and researcher.” Dothan, AL PG (parental guidance) rating “Something about my family that makes me proud is that we are very close and we are always there for each other, no matter the circumstance.” parents’ perspective Kwang and Misook admire Leanne’s determination and work ethic. As parents, my husband and I sup- port and encourage Leanne.
