The Faculty of Natural Sciences Graduate School actively promotes interdisciplinary research and collaboration .
Our PhD research projects span a spectrum of science from fire ecology through medicinal chemistry , applied mathematics and stellar astrophysics to evidence-based software engineering and the identification of genes associated with cancer and other diseases .
Our seven research centres provide a multidisciplinary environment to support research and enterprise in the areas of :
• Geography , Geology and Environment
• Chemical Sciences
• Astrophysics
• Computer Science
• Mathematics
• Psychology
• Life Sciences
Our students have access to quality research resources and benefit from continued growth of our natural sciences laboratories and research space . We offer expert research training and supervision , as well as support at all stages of the research degree . We aim to prepare our research graduates for progression into successful academic careers or industrial employment . A major programme of investment is currently underway , including a £ 10 million investment in the Life Sciences building , to ensure a high-quality student experience for all . This will be followed by the delivery of a major new Central Science Laboratory , planned to be delivered over the next few years .
Our students are mentored by leading experts in their field . Our research delivers real world impact in many areas , including the reduction of aircraft and locomotive engine noise , improving the health and quality of farmed fish , eco-efficient monitoring of agricultural pests , novel methods for computational medical image analysis and improved ways to support the social and emotional wellbeing of children .
Achievements In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework assessment exercise , our research was judged to be world-leading and internationally important across all submissions , with research funding increasing by 34 % on the previous year as a result . Recent large awards have been received from the European Research Council , Medical Research Council , BBSRC Global Challenges Research Fund and many others . Thanks to support from the UK government and the European Regional Development Fund , Keele is transforming its campus into a living laboratory to test new renewable energy technology , effectively acting as a small town – scale demonstrator for solutions previously only studied at small scale .
