School of Computing and Mathematics
The School of Computing and Mathematics has highly rated research in a number of cutting-edge areas , including computational neuroscience , software engineering , evolutionary systems , machine learning and computational intelligence .
The innovative design of our postgraduate programme brings together our strengths in these areas and combines them with our industrial expertise and collaborations with national and international companies .
This course is designed to provide students with the key elements to enable academic and business application of leading edge computing concepts , techniques and technologies . A number of our modules have been developed to complement active research interests within the department and we have had extremely positive feedback from both graduates and companies for our student placements that are part of our programme .
We aim to develop students with both technical and people skills ; making our postgraduates highly employable in a range of roles , to enable you to follow a broad spectrum of opportunities to forward your career .
You will use a variety of innovative learning tools and methods in studying for our courses . Formal lectures , taken by experts within the field from academia and industry , are supplemented by smaller , group tutorials and practical sessions , which are dependent on the topics being covered in the module .
A virtual learning environment is used to provide you with access to a wide range of electronic learning materials . We are keen to attract applicants from a variety of backgrounds and support and training is provided , as needed , in programming , to ensure all students have similar skills and experience .
Striving for continual improvement According to the latest UK research assessment , the REF 2014 , all of our research is classed as internationally recognised with around 75 % of our published papers being considered internationally excellent or world leading .
We have an excellent track record of getting external grant funding from the UK research funding agencies EPSRC and BBSRC , the EU research funding programme Horizon2020 and charities such as the Leverhulme Trust . We also have a number of collaborative industrial research projects ( KTP ) funded by the InnovateUK and partner companies .
